1 September 2008

You are only three weeks away from race day and we are nearly as excited about the up-coming races as you are at this time. Registration numbers are up slightly compared to this time last year with 34 states represented, and another 5% from Canada. A 90-year-young participant is going for a half marathon age group world record and the female entrants comprise 49% of the field. The aforementioned young athlete set a marathon world record here in Erie when he was 85. The weather forecast for race day is 54/74 with light clouds and only a 10% chance of light rain. Are you excited yet?

We came across some marathon tips that we think would be worth a read whether this is your first or 100th marathon and we would like to share them with you via the following link: http://www.runnerslounge.com/Tips%20for%20Marathoners.doc . These marathon tips are brought to you by Runners Lounge. For more race day tips, look for our new medical directors’ letter in your packets. Dr. Andy King and Dr. Jeff Kim join us this year from Saint Vincent Sports Medicine.

If you have registered for this year’s race and have not received an email confirmation, and/or don’t see your name in the entrant list on our web site, please contact us at eriemara@yahoo.com. The entrant list will be updated again over the week end.

If you have not registered yet, there is still time for on-line registration at www.marathonguide.com . Hard/mail-in copies are also available on our web site.

For all race details, visit our website, www.eriemarathon.org.

Check out the race course here: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/pa/erie/441064244 . This may load slowly so please be patient. Play with this map by zooming in on the packet pick-up/start/finish area or zoom out and click and drag the map to get a broader picture of Erie and how to get around. The aerial view is cool also. Additional course maps with mile markers are available on our web site.

There is ample parking on race morning at either Beach #6 or #8. Both are about 0.25 miles from the start/finish line so please park in the lot the parking marshals are directing you to on race morning. Packet pick-up parking on Saturday is right at the start/finish (Rotary Pavilion) – there is NO PARKING in this area on race morning.

A special thanks goes out to our sponsors of many years: Time Warner Cable, SUBWAY and Welders Supply, who have helped us bring these quality events to you each year. Sponsoring for the first time this year is Gannon University’s Sport and Exercise Science.

Thanks to all of you who have helped to build our race by recruiting others.

We hope you are enjoying your summer and running some of the local races in your communities. If you are looking for a tune-up for the marathon, our club is sponsoring a half marathon this week end (7/20 7:30 AM) that is run on the same course as our marathon (info at www.erie-runnersclub.org).

The 35th running of the Erie Marathon will take place on September 14th at 7AM. Register at www.marathonguide.com by midnight July 15th and pay only $45 for 26.2 miles or only $35 for 13.1 miles. If you have registered already, thank you.

Current year registrations are still running ahead of last years pace thanks to those of you that have run Erie before and have spread the word about our "little" race on the lake. A registration list will be posted on our website by the end of the week.

Our primary sponsor, Time Warner Cable is up to it again this year with some sort of a goodie bag item. Last year it was a pair of micro fiber socks. This year...who knows? (We don't even know yet).

For all race details, visit our website, www.eriemarathon.org.
