ERIE MARATHON - HALF MARATHON – 5K
Sponsored by Rentway
Sunday, September 10, 2006 – 7:30 AM
Event: Each participant will run a full USATF certified (PA 06020) marathon (26.2 miles) at Presque Isle State Park on Sun., Sept. 10, 2006 at 7:30 a.m.
The Course: The start/finish is in the Rotary Pavilion Area (approximately 3 miles from park entrance) and the loop course will be run primarily on Presque Isle State Park. This marathon is quite possibly the flattest course in the country. World records were recently set on this course in 2003 and 2005. It is certainly a Boston qualifier and has a course record prime to be broken: Male - Terrence L. Stanley 2:19:27 (1978); Female - Marjorie Tennyson Podgajny 2:55:15 (1981). Please note that all participants must maintain a 12 minute mile pace. Course will close accordingly and those remaining on the course must surrender their Chip and move to the multi-purpose trail that runs parallel to the course. Early start is an option (see below). Champion chip timing by Runners High.
Early Start: Those who expect a marathon time of greater than 5 hours will be allowed to start at 6:30 am. These early starts will not be eligible for awards or an offical finishing time that would qualify them for other marathons such as Boston. You must pre-register to participate as a early starter.
Commemoratives: Entrants will receive a micro-fiber shirt. In addition, all marathon finishers will receive a finishers medal at the finish line, and will be mailed a finishers certificate suitable for framing.
Awards and Results: First, second and third places overall (M & F); First place masters division (M & F);
Individual awards (M & F) in the following age groups:19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and over.
- The Rich Martino Memorial Award will be given to the first place male and female first time marathoner.
- A special award will also be presented to the first Erie County male and female finisher.
The Event: Each participant will run or racewalk a USATF certified (PA 06019) half marathon (13.1 miles) - loop of Presque Isle State Park. Half marathon participants start with the marathon at 7:30 a.m. The racewalk division will be judged and running will result in disqualification.

22 August 2006 - We learned last week that due to delays on a park bridge project our traditional course will most likely not be available this year. This would involve a two mile section along the bay side, miles 8 & 9, not being available. A new alternate course, which was measured by a USATF certifier on August 20th, will utilize a 1.2 mile section of a side walk (Sidewalk Trail) that cuts straight across the interior of the park. This change along with other minor alterations will keep us entirely within the park and add no additional elevation change. A map of this new alternate course is available here. (Be warned - this is a large image.) Printable 8-1/2x11 - Printable 11x17.
