INDIVIDUAL MARATHON

Event: Each participant will run a full USATF certified marathon (26.2 miles) at Presque Isle State Park on Sun., Sept. 11, 2005 at 7:30 a.m. Cert. # - PA 05011 WB.

The Course: The start/finish is in the Rotary Pavilion Area (approximately 3 miles from the entrance to the park) and the course will consist of two complete loops of Presque Isle State Park. This marathon is quite possibly the flattest course in the country with no major elevation changes at all. It is certainly a Boston qualifier and has a course record prime to be broken: Male - Terrence L. Stanley 2:19:27 (1978); Female - Marjorie Tennyson Podgajny 2:55:15 (1981). Please note that all participants must maintain a 12 minute mile pace.

Commemoratives: Entrants will receive a mircro-fiber shirt. In addition, all marathon finishers will receive a finishers medal at the finish line, and will be mailed a finishers certificate suitable for framing.

Awards and Results: First, second and third places overall (M & F); First place masters division (M & F); Top Wheelchair (M & F);
Individual awards (M & F) in the following age groups:19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and over.

  • The Rich Martino Memorial Award will be given to the first place male and female first time marathoner.
  • A special award will also be presented to the first Erie County male and female finisher.

Timing: Champion chip timing by The Runner’s High.

Early Start: Those who expect a marathon time of greater than 5 hours will be required to start at 6:30 am. Other runners who do not expect to place may choose the early start. These early starts will not be eligible for awards.

MARATHON RELAY (Four person)

The Event: Each participant will run one of four segments that range between 6 miles and 7.2 miles with all exchanges at or a short distance from the start/finish area. The lead-off marathon relay participants will start with the marathon field at 7:30 a.m. All four applications should be submitted together and contain the team’s name.

The Course: The start/finish is in the Rotary Pavilion Area (approximately 3 miles from the entrance to the park) and the course will consist of two complete loops of Presque Isle State Park. This marathon is quite possibly the flattest course in the country with no major elevation changes at all.

Commemoratives: Entrants will receive a mircro-fiber shirt.

Awards and Results: A relay award will be presented for each of the following catagories: Corporate, High School, Open, and Masters: Female, Male, and Mixed. Masters is defined as: All participants over 40 years of age. There must be two or more pre-registered (deadline 8/27/2005) teams in a given category to be eligible for an award.

HALF- MARATHON – Run or RaceWalk

The Event: Each participant will run or racewalk a half marathon (13.1 miles) - one loop of Presque Isle State Park. Half marathon participants start with the marathon at 7:30 a.m. The racewalk division will be judged and running will result in disqualification. Cert. # - PA 05010 WB.

The Course: The start/finish is in the Rotary Pavilion Area (approximately 3 miles from the entrance to the park) and the course will consist of two complete loops of Presque Isle State Park. This marathon is quite possibly the flattest course in the country with no major elevation changes at all.

Commemoratives: Entrants will receive a mircro-fiber shirt. In addition, all half-marathon finishers will receive a commemorative at the finish line.

Awards and Results:
1/2 Marathon Run: First, second and third places overall (M & F); First place masters division (M & F); Individual awards (M & F) in the following age groups: 19 and under;20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and over.
1/2 Marathon Racewalk: First five male and female finishers. No other awards in this division.

5K FUN RUN/ WALK

The Event: A non-competitive 5K fun run/walk starts at 7:45 a.m. near the Rotary Pavilion. Course will follow parts of the marathon course and will finish near the marathon finish line. No awards will be given for this event, but an official clock will be in operation and results will be available. All entrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

For Your Safety:

  • The race committee reserves the right to reject any entry.
  • No bicycles, roller or in-line skates, or vehicles of any kind are permitted on the course.
  • All water stops, support facilities, and other personnel will be instructed to close their station at a time corresponding to a 12- minute-per-mile pace.
  • Daylight on Presque Isle will be at about 6:45. Please bring a flashlight for early morning navigation

Runner Services: Stations serving water and sport drink will be placed along the course at approximately one mile increments. Gu will be available at one spot (passed twice) along the course.

Race Day Parking: Adequate free parking will be available at Presque Isle State Park, but please be sure to follow parking regulations and be aware illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed by park police. Specific parking instructions along with a detail map of the start/finish area will be provided in each participants packet.

Weather: The average temperature for September is 61 degrees with an average high of 70 and an average low of 53. (Source: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).

Our host hotels typically offer participants a late check-out time of 2 p.m. on race day. Be sure to ask for the Marathon rate when making your room reservations.

Packet Pickup: Packet pickup and late registration will be held at the Rotary Pavilion, Presque Isle State Park, on Saturday from noon until 7 p.m. and from 6:00 a.m. until 7:15 a.m. the morning of the race. If at all possible, please pick up your packet on Saturday and get a good look at the course at the same time. ChampionChip pickup will be Sunday morning from 5:30 until 7:20 at the Rotary Pavillion on Presque Isle State Park.

Awards Ceremony: The awards ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. for the half marathon and noon for the marathon and marathon-relay.
No duplication of awards except for the Erie County Award and Rich Martino Award.

Race Photographers: Photographers from Brightroom Photography will be on hand to take pictures, which will be made available to runners at a future date.

Why should I run the Erie Marathon?

Fast & Flat - With a total elevation change of 12 feet, this is, quite possibly, the flattest course in the country.
Great support - 28 water & sport drink stops. Take that, Boston!
Shade - 3/4 of the course is shaded. The other 1/4 is along the lake & bay.
Price - compare our prices with anyone
Presque Isle State Park - you won't find a more scenic course.

Pasta Dinner

Details for the Pasta Dinner have been announced. Cost will be $5/head with the following:

Tickets for the dinner will be available at packet pickup. Dinner hours are 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Saturday at the Rotary Pavillion (the same location as the packet pickup)

Welcome 50 State Marathon Club

The Erie Marathon would like to welcome the 50 States Marathon Club to the Erie Marathon for 2005. They've chosen Erie for their 3rd quarter 2005 reunion meeting. These folks have the goal of running a marathon in each of the 50 United States plus DC.
